Charm bracelets are meant to tell a story about the wearer and are great fun to create. You can make a silver charm bracelet in no time at all at our Make Your Own Charm Bracelet page or take your time, sometime these can take years to create, as I said before, they tell a story about the wearer.

Charm bracelets are very personable and any wearer will love going through all their silver charms with you, explaining what they are, who bought the charm for them or why they bought the charm for themselves and what occasion they are reminded of.

Charm bracelets are sometimes handed down from generation to generation, never in or out of fashion, and with so many intricate designs to choose from, who could resist starting a family heir loom of their own!

Sometimes you just can’t help looking at these beautifully crafted pieces of jewellery and thinking of your friends; in my case its silver shoe charms for my friend Julia, who has a passion for shoes, animal charms for my friend Caroline the animal lover and handbag charms for Nicole, the lady with the superb collection of handbags. I just love them!

Britain’s biggest jewellery robbery saw £40 million worth of diamonds stolen from Graff Diamonds in Mayfair. In total 43 bracelets, necklaces, rings and watches were stolen in less than two minutes.

Det Supt Stuart Cundy, of Scotland Yard, said that he was keeping an "open mind" about the robbery and had considered that the diamonds may have been stolen to order or that the criminals were helped by an insider. Det Insp Jason Prins added: “The items that were stolen will be very difficult to sell on the open market so I think there was already a market in place.”

The suspects, dressed smartly in suits, were dropped off at Graff Diamonds in central London in a black cab last Thursday afternoon and walked straight past a security guard. It is thought that they had made an appointment to visit the store using a false name. The suspects’ images have been circulated to all ports and airports but police believe they will have organised an escape route and may already have left the country.

A former head of the Flying Squad, told The Telegraph: “It has all the hallmarks of a well-executed, well-planned raid. Because of the specific nature of the articles they went for I think there would have to have been insider knowledge involved and good reconnaissance prior to the raid.”

This story shows you how easy it is to steal from a high end jewellery store, perhaps another reason why it is more secure to buy your jewellery online. Here at Coolrocks we offer a collection of diamond rings, for you to order safely and securely at your leisure.

I’m sure most women out there would agree – we can be completely FASCINATED by jewellery almost borderline obsessed by it in fact! Whether it be a silver necklace, a pair of gold earrings or a diamond ring, jewellery can have the same affect on a woman that a sweet shop has on a child. The evidence is always crystal clear on a high street on a busy day – just check out a jewellery store and you can guarantee to see a woman looking at the jewellery on display with a far away and dreamy look in their eyes.

Diamonds were Marilyn Monroes best friend. The character Willie in Raiders of the Lost Ark couldn’t care less about the bullets flying around her, once she clocked the diamond that fell to the floor she quite happily got on her hands and knees amongst all the mayhem with only one thought in her mind - to grab the diamond and claim it as her own. The film Casino is another perfect example on the effect jewellery can have on a woman, Sharon Stones character Ginger was a tough, smart, independent and strong willed woman, but on being presented with a (very) big box filled with jewellery she was almost zombified into a mass jewellery fuelled awe!

Why is this I wonder? It is because of society? Maybe women have become sub-consciously programmed to place emphasis on and desire all things that glitter and sparkle? It is due to Mothers letting her Daughters wear the most special pieces of jewellery on special occasions thus instilling a sense of reverence with regards to jewellery? Perhaps men are to blame?! Men will often buy a loved one a piece of jewellery to show their affection, the ultimate gift being a diamond which has become symbolic to lasting love and unity. Or, dare I ask, do women wear jewellery not just to feel more confident but to actually appear more attractive to men?

Running on from the question with attracting the opposite sex, what is really interesting is with animals, birds in particular, the male is usually the more attractive of the species and they can become even more attractive during their mating ritual. A male peacock will proudly show off its beautiful and colourful plumage as a sign of courtship to attract the female peacocks. Male birds are just as fascinated by jewellery and sparkles as female humans are - in fact the Magpie is notorious for it!

A friend of mine once said something to me which I will always remember. He said “women are beautiful creatures, diverse, unpredictable, complex and passionate. The very least a man can do is admire them for all that they are and represent - buying a special piece of jewellery is a way of doing that.”

I personally think that jewellery can make a women feel special, loved and beautiful. There are so many intricate jewellery designs available today with such a staggering amount of choice that one can’t help but admire and appreciate the workmanship, plus these days silver jewellery in particular is available at such a low price it is possible to own several pieces and keep adding to the collection. Or……is that just that my natural female response?

What are your theories behind this fascination?

Back then jewellery was nothing compared to how it looks today due to the lack of knowledge to handle precious metals, in some instances these metals were not discovered at the time. Original jewellery pieces were created using natural materials such as shells, wood, carved stones, animal teeth and bones.

As man evolved jewellery did also, and with the discovery of precious metals and gemstones, jewellery became more valuable and has been used over the centuries for various reasons such as:

Currency - Many ancient civilizations at some point kept large amounts of jewellery as a form of wealth.

Symbolism - To show status or to worship gods and goddesses, hence the Christian Crucifix or the Jewish Star of David.

Protection - From ancient times till now people have used jewellery as amulets of devotional medals.

Artistic Display - Relating more to modern times, towards the end of the 19th century this use became common, through the work of master jewellery craftsmen Peter Carl Faberge and Rene Lalique.

Since man started to use metals to make jewellery, alloys of almost every metal have been encountered in jewellery, for instance the Romans used bronze to make their jewellery, and bronze is an alloy of various metals with copper being the primarily metal.

Nowadays, high standard jewellery is made with gold, silver, platinum, palladium and sometimes even titanium which is known for being an extremely resilient metal, with gold and silver being the most common metals used.

Silver or Platinum alloys range from 900 (90% pure) to 950 (95%) pure and the most common type of silver used is sterling silver, hence the name sterling silver jewellery.
