The History of Jewellery Making

Category: News, Published: 29,June 2009

filigree silver locket The term jewellery can be used to simply describe an item of personal adornment such as earrings, bracelets, necklace, silver charms, etc. These adornments has been part of history since very early times.

Back then jewellery was nothing compared to how it looks today due to the lack of knowledge to handle precious metals, in some instances these metals were not discovered at the time. Original jewellery pieces were created using natural materials such as shells, wood, carved stones, animal teeth and bones.

As man evolved jewellery did also, and with the discovery of precious metals and gemstones, jewellery became more valuable and has been used over the centuries for various reasons such as:

  • Currency - Many ancient civilizations at some point kept large amounts of jewellery as a form of wealth.
  • Symbolism - To show status or to worship gods and goddesses, hence the Christian Crucifix or the Jewish Star of David.
  • Protection - From ancient times till now people have used jewellery as amulets of devotional medals.
  • Artistic Display - Relating more to modern times, towards the end of the 19th century this use became common, through the work of master jewellery craftsmen Peter Carl Faberge and Rene Lalique.

Since man started to use metals to make jewellery, alloys of almost every metal have been encountered in jewellery, for instance the Romans used bronze to make their jewellery, and bronze is an alloy of various metals with copper being the primarily metal.

Nowadays, high standard jewellery is made with gold, silver, platinum, palladium and sometimes even titanium which is known for being an extremely resilient metal, with gold and silver being the most common metals used.

Silver or Platinum alloys range from 900 (90% pure) to 950 (95%) pure and the most common type of silver used is sterling silver, hence the name sterling silver jewellery.

Jasmin Wagner with Romy Schneiders Charm BraceletThe ‘New Faces Award’ is an exclusive event held in Berlin every year attended by around 1000 guests from the film, media, society and business industry, and for the fifth time Giorgio Martello was the official jewellery provider for this event.

Giorgio Martello, as an official partner to the awards, was present throughout the evening decorating well known German stars with his world renowned silver charms and jewellery.

A definite highlight of the evening was the ultra glamorous charm bracelet belonging to famous actress Romy Schneider (who died in 1992) being exhibited at Giorgio Martellos exclusive bar. Romy Schneider apparently sold her unique charm bracelet to a fan before moving to Paris and many years later Giorgio Martello bought this bracelet at the Dorotheum in Vienna.

The bracelet which contains 25 different charms drew a great deal lot of interest from the glitzy crowd and goes to show that the popularity of charm bracelets shows no sign of abating, particularly now when there are so many different silver charms available enabling a completely unique look.
